Change follows criticism of Rs 70 daily pass
BENGALURU:
Commuters travelling in BMTC buses need not buy a Rs 70 daily pass, starting Tuesday. After much criticism over passengers having to pay Rs 70 even for short distances that would have cost Rs 5 earlier, the transport corporation has tweaked its old fare structure, as per which tickets will range from Rs 5 to Rs 30.
The fare structure is: Up to 2 km – Rs 5, 3-4 km – Rs 10, 5-6 km – Rs 15, 7-14 km – Rs 20, 15-40 km – Rs 25, and above 41km – Rs 30. The fares are applicable within the city limits.

According to a press release by BMTC, the pass system was meant to minimise physical contact as a precaution Covid-19.
In view of public demand, a flat fare proposal was sent to the government and was approved, with effect from Tuesday.
The system is envisaged to minimize repeated transactions with passengers. “Passengers will need to provide the exact amount while travelling. All passengers have to compulsorily wear masks and not to cause crowding in buses,” the release said.
In addition to the flat fare system effective from May 26, daily and weekly passes will continue to be available at the same price.
BMTC buses will ply every day from 7 am to 7 pm, except on Sunday.
