Bengaluru: Veteran Kannada comedian and popular character actor Umesh passed away on Friday after battling illness. He was undergoing treatment at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, where he breathed his last. His mortal remains are expected to be shifted to his residence in JP Nagar.
Umesh, known for his unmistakable screen presence, comic timing and uniquely expressive body language, leaves behind a legacy that spans more than 350 films. Generations of Kannada film lovers—past and present—remember him fondly for the effortless humour he brought to every role.
His performances in films such as Bhakta Prahlada, Guru Shishyaru, Bhagya Lakshmi, Bhagyavantharu, Halu Jenu, Kamanabillu, Apoorva Sangama, Shruthi Seridaga, Meghabandar, Akasamika, Sangrama, Server Somanna, Nanna Aaseya Hoove, Meghamale, Jockey, and Rambo remain unforgettable.
Umesh was also widely adored for his trademark dialogue “Dayavittu apaartha maadko beda”, a line that became a cultural catchphrase across Karnataka—especially among college students.
Despite working with industry legends such as Dr. Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Shivarajkumar, Puneeth Rajkumar, and many others, colleagues remember him as a humble, grounded, and soft-spoken artist who never carried ego or pride. His small roles often turned into scene-stealing moments because of his natural flair and charm.
The Kannada film industry has expressed deep shock and grief over his demise, remembering him as one of the finest comedians and supporting actors to ever grace the screen.
