Vijayapura: A massive fire broke out at a car service centre in Vijayapura late Tuesday night, reducing more than 20 vehicles to ashes and causing losses running into crores of rupees.
The incident occurred at HMK Car Service Centre, owned by Hanumanth Kanamadi, within the limits of Gol Gumbaz Police Station. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing the entire service facility and destroying vehicles that had been parked for servicing and repairs.
Eyewitnesses said the flames intensified within minutes, leaving no opportunity to salvage the vehicles. Despite efforts by local residents and garage staff to control the blaze using available water sources, the fire could not be contained.
According to the service centre owner, work had continued normally until around 10 pm, after which the staff left the premises. He was alerted about the fire by the police in the early hours and rushed to the spot, only to find the entire garage completely gutted.
“There were around 15 to 20 vehicles inside the service centre. Everything has been completely destroyed. Nothing has survived,” the owner said.
Fire and emergency services later arrived at the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control. However, by then, all vehicles inside the premises had been reduced to scrap. In addition to the vehicles, spare parts worth approximately ₹35 lakh were also destroyed in the fire.
Preliminary information suggests that the fire may have originated due to an electrical short circuit, though the exact cause is yet to be officially confirmed. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the total damage.
No casualties were reported in the incident. However, the incident has left vehicle owners and the service centre proprietor devastated, with many facing severe financial losses.
Authorities have urged garage owners to strictly follow fire safety norms to prevent such incidents in the future.
