Hassan: In a shocking temple desecration case in Belur, Hassan district, police have arrested a woman named Leelamma for allegedly placing a slipper on a Ganesh idol inside a temple located within the Belur Town Municipality premises.
According to officials, CCTV footage captured the woman entering the temple wearing slippers and later exiting barefoot, strengthening suspicions of her involvement. Based on this evidence, a special police team led by Banavara PSI Suresh tracked down and arrested Leelamma near Guddehnahalli, Hassan. She is currently being interrogated.

The case sparked outrage among local devotees and Hindu organizations. Temple president Virupaksha had lodged a complaint at the Belur Police Station, following which several groups staged protests demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.
Responding to public anger, police formed eight special investigation teams, which eventually led to the suspect’s arrest. Authorities have confirmed that further investigation is underway to establish the motive behind the act.
This incident has stirred religious sentiments in the region, with community leaders demanding strict punishment for those attempting to disturb communal harmony.
