CHIKAMAGALUR/BENGALURU:
A disturbing incident unfolded in Chikmagalur city on Thursday night when the police stopped a young lawyer on the road for not wearing a helmet and subsequently took him to the police station.
In response to this incident, hundreds of lawyers gathered in front of the police station and staged a protest that lasted until midnight. The Superintendent of Police (SP) took swift action by suspending 6 policemen, including the PSI of the city station, for their involvement in assaulting the lawyer.
On Thursday night, Pritam, a young lawyer, was riding his bike home in the city when he was stopped by the police on patrol. They questioned him about not wearing a helmet and confiscated the key to his bike. Pritam, in a calm manner, asked why his key was taken and assured the police that he would pay the fine. Unfortunately, this simple exchange escalated into a heated argument between the police and the lawyer.

According to reports, the enraged police officers forcefully took the lawyer to the police station and subjected him to a brutal beating. As news of the incident spread, more than 50 lawyers gathered in front of the city police station.
Expressing his outrage at the behavior of the police, the lawyer filed a complaint demanding action against the officers who assaulted him.
A group of lawyers, frustrated by the lack of action taken despite the complaint, staged a protest in front of the police station that lasted until midnight. They chanted slogans against the SP and insisted that he personally address the situation.
SP Dr. Vikram Amate arrived at the scene and attempted to persuade the protestors to disperse. However, their determination remained unwavering as they vowed to continue their sit-in until the police officers who assaulted the lawyer were arrested and charged.
As the sit-in escalated, a case was filed against six policemen, including PSI Mahesh who had assaulted the lawyer.
A complaint has been lodged under sections 307, 324, 506, and 504, prompting the Superintendent of Police (SP) to issue an order suspending six policemen, including PSI and ASI from the city station.
