Bengaluru: Bengaluru Central Corporations Commissioner Rajendra Cholan carried out a surprise inspection on Monday, covering nearly 25 km across arterial and sub-arterial roads of Chikkapete division on a two-wheeler to assess potholes, ongoing road repairs, and civic issues.
However, the move invited criticism as the commissioner was spotted riding with a non-ISI branded helmet, raising questions about road safety compliance from a top civic official himself. Critics argued that while the inspection was aimed at ensuring road safety, the symbolic lapse undermined the very message of citizen responsibility and enforcement.
During the ride, the commissioner directed officials to:
- Urgently close all potholes with quality standards
- Undertake junction and circle development
- Complete asphalt resurfacing on Hosur Road
- Remove roadside garbage black spots and prevent recurrence
- Repair footpaths to ensure pedestrian safety
- Install fencing and prepare a DPR for development of BBMP land at JC Road

Key stretches inspected:
Bull Temple Road, Vanivilas Road, Shankarmutt Road, K.R. Road, National College Left, West Gate, R.V. Road, Teachers College Left, Kanakanapalya Road, T. Marigowda Road, Hosur Road, Krumbigal Road (West Gate Right), J.C. Road, Poornima Talkies Road, Lalbagh Road.
The commissioner was accompanied by Chief Engineer Vijaykumar Haridas, Superintendent Engineers, Executive Engineers, AEE, AE, JE staff, and marshals during the inspection.
Observers acknowledged the commissioner’s on-ground initiative but underlined that public officials must set an example by following safety norms themselves.
