Bengaluru: With the Bengaluru civic elections drawing closer, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC President D. K. Shivakumar on Thursday said there is widespread political uncertainty in several constituencies but asserted that the Congress party is witnessing overwhelming enthusiasm ahead of the polls.
“Many people are confused about their political future. Elections in Bengaluru city are approaching, and a large number of aspirants are keen to contest on a Congress ticket,” Shivakumar said.
Sharing details of ticket applications received so far, he said:
- Bengaluru West Corporation: 247 applications
- Bengaluru North Corporation: 199 applications
- Bengaluru South Corporation: 129 applications
- Bengaluru Central Corporation: 106 applications
- Bengaluru East Corporation: 78 applications
“In total, 779 ticket aspirants have submitted applications,” he said.
Shivakumar urged aspirants not to wait until the last date. “Those who have taken applications should submit them within the next two or three days. If applications are submitted by January 10, we can send our teams to the wards to assess who has worked on the ground, who has not, and who is loyal to the party. Last-minute submissions make proper scrutiny difficult,” he explained.
Sharp Message to BJP and JD(S)
Referring to opposition statements about a “friendly fight,” Shivakumar dismissed the idea and issued a direct challenge.
“Even BJP leaders are acknowledging the work done by our government in Bengaluru. Drinking water issues have been resolved, roads are being built, and khata conversion and property documentation are being streamlined. Some BJP leaders themselves say they see no future,” he claimed.
“Please don’t talk about friendly fights. Fight directly. Contest together, share seats and fight openly. Your friendly fight only confuses your own workers. We are fully ready for a direct political battle,” Shivakumar said.
Five-Corporation Decision Under National Spotlight
Highlighting administrative reforms, Shivakumar said the decision to divide Bengaluru into five city corporations to improve governance is being closely watched across the country.
“Chamarajapet is a historic constituency. Our approach is to carry everyone along and ensure inclusive governance,” he said, adding that many leaders from other parties are in touch with the Congress seeking to join ahead of the civic polls.
He advised potential entrants to take an early decision. “If they come late, it becomes difficult to take decisions during the election process,” he cautioned.
Election Year for Local Bodies
Shivakumar said the government has already submitted an affidavit in court committing to the conduct of civic elections.
“This year has been treated as an election year, and elections to other local bodies will also be held. The Chief Minister has discussed the matter with the Rural Development Minister and decided to clear all legal hurdles. Party workers must be fully prepared,” he said.
The Congress leader concluded by calling on party cadres to remain election-ready, stressing that while victory and defeat are part of politics, organisational preparedness will be key in the upcoming Bengaluru civic battle.
