Bengaluru: Shirahatti BJP MLA Chandru Lamani, who was arrested by the Lokayukta police while allegedly accepting ₹5 lakh from a contractor, has been remanded to judicial custody till March 3 by a court in Bengaluru.
Lamani, who was reportedly caught red-handed during a Lokayukta trap, was produced before the judge and sent to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. The court also remanded his government PA Manjunath and relative Guru Lamani to judicial custody.
Meanwhile, an alleged audio clip purportedly featuring Lamani in conversation with contractor Vijay Pujar has gone viral, adding a fresh dimension to the case. In the clip, Lamani is allegedly heard discussing payments and issuing stern warnings. The authenticity of the audio, however, has not been officially confirmed.
The bribery case has triggered a sharp political exchange between the BJP and Congress. Congress leaders have accused the BJP of systemic corruption, while BJP leaders have claimed the case may be politically motivated.
The case stems from allegations that Lamani demanded commission in connection with a public works contract. The Lokayukta operation reportedly followed a complaint by the contractor, leading to the trap and arrest.
With the judicial custody now extended and viral audio clips circulating widely, the case has intensified political tensions in Karnataka. Further investigation is underway.
