Bengaluru, February 17: A gang posing as police personnel allegedly looted ₹20 lakh in cash and nearly half a kilogram of gold ornaments from the residence of a real estate entrepreneur in BEL Layout, north Bengaluru. Police have launched a manhunt for the accused, who are said to be four in number.
The incident occurred at the residence of Hombalegowda on Monday when he was at home with his wife Mangalamma and their grandchildren. According to the complaint, the accused arrived at the house claiming to be officials from Yelahanka Police Station. Carrying a bag and a diary to appear authentic, they initially convinced the family of their identity.
However, the situation turned violent when the gang allegedly threatened the elderly couple with a gun and a knife. The victims’ hands and legs were tied with black tape before the house was thoroughly searched. The accused decamped with cash, gold ornaments and mobile phones.
Police said two members of the gang entered the house while two others stood guard outside. After committing the robbery, the accused allegedly removed the CCTV DVR from the house to erase evidence before fleeing.
Following the complaint, police have registered a case and formed two special teams to trace the accused. CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being examined as part of the investigation.
The incident has triggered panic among local residents, especially given that the gang carried out the robbery while impersonating police officers. Further investigation is underway.
