Bengaluru, January 9: The Karnataka Government has announced the State Film Awards for the calendar years 2020 and 2021, recognising outstanding lifetime contributions to Kannada cinema through its most prestigious honours — the Dr Rajkumar Award, Puttanna Kanagal Award, and Dr Vishnuvardhan Award.
The announcement was made by Hemanth M. Nimbalkar, Commissioner, Department of Information and Public Relations.
Each award carries a 50-gram gold medal and a cash prize of ₹5 lakh, honouring individuals whose work has shaped the cultural, artistic, and ideological foundations of Kannada cinema.
Awardees – 2020 & 2021
Dr Rajkumar Award (Lifetime Achievement)
- 2020: Jayamala, senior actress, producer, former minister
- 2021: Sa.Ra. Govindu, film producer and film chamber leader
Puttanna Kanagal Award
- 2020: M. S. Sathyu, noted filmmaker and theatre personality
- 2021: K. Shivrudraiah, filmmaker and writer
Dr Vishnuvardhan Award
- 2020: Pragathi Ashwathanarayana, legendary still photographer
- 2021: M. K. Sundarraj, senior film and television actor
Selection Process
The awardees were selected by a high-level committee chaired by noted writer and filmmaker Baraguru Ramachandrappa.
The committee included senior cinematographer B. S. Basavaraj, veteran journalist Raghunath Ch. H., Director of Kannada & Culture Gayathri, and the Information Department Commissioner.
After detailed deliberations, the committee’s recommendations were submitted to the government and formally approved by Siddaramaiah, following which the official government order was issued.
Profiles of the Awardees (Highlights)
Jayamala (Dr Rajkumar Award – 2020)
A leading actress of Kannada cinema, Jayamala made her mark in over 70 films across Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Tulu and Malayalam. Her career took a decisive turn with Dr Rajkumar’s “Premada Kanike”, after which she acted alongside him in seven films.
Her critically acclaimed performance in Girish Kasaravalli’s “Thaayi Saheba”, a National Award-winning film, cemented her stature as a serious performer. She later emerged as a producer, politician, minister, and President of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, and holds a PhD in Political Science.
Sa.Ra. Govindu (Dr Rajkumar Award – 2021)
A close associate of Dr Rajkumar, Govindu played a key role in strengthening fan movements and Kannada cultural campaigns, including the Gokak movement. He produced several films under his banner and served two terms as President of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. He has dedicated the award to Dr Rajkumar himself.
M. S. Sathyu (Puttanna Kanagal Award – 2020)
A pioneering filmmaker and theatre activist, Sathyu is best known for “Garam Hava” (1974), a landmark film on the Partition of India that won the Nargis Dutt National Award and was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
A recipient of the Padma Shri, Sathyu’s cinema consistently explored social justice, human dignity, and marginalised voices, leaving a lasting legacy in Indian parallel cinema.
K. Shivrudraiah (Puttanna Kanagal Award – 2021)
A former Information Department officer turned filmmaker, Shivrudraiah directed around 11 feature films based on works of prominent Kannada writers. His films have received state, national and international awards, and he has also contributed significantly to wildlife photography and theatre.
Pragathi Ashwathanarayana (Dr Vishnuvardhan Award – 2020)
A legendary still photographer, Ashwathanarayana documented over 300 films across four decades. Founder of Pragathi Studio, his archive of over 2.5 lakh photo negatives is considered a priceless visual history of Kannada cinema.
M. K. Sundarraj (Dr Vishnuvardhan Award – 2021)
A versatile actor with a career spanning nearly 300 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, Sundarraj excelled in character, comic and negative roles. A disciple of theatre maestro B. V. Karanth, he has also worked as assistant director and production manager and is a recipient of the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award.
The announcement of the 2020–21 Karnataka State Film Awards is being seen as a significant tribute to cinema professionals who shaped Kannada cinema’s artistic depth, cultural identity, and national recognition.
