Kannada watchdog notes that civic chief’s recent circulars were in English
Thebengalurulive awaits Anil Kumar’s response
BENGALURU:
The Kannada Development authority has recommended ‘disciplinary’ action against BBMP Commissioner BH Anil Kumar for his ‘failure’ to promote the use of Kannada within the civic agency.
Kannada Development Authority Chairman TS Naghabharana made the demand in a letter addressed to Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar over the BBMP Commissioner’s recent circulars issued in English.
In his letter, Naghabharana said the Kannada Development Authority is mandated by law to protect the interests of the Kannada language. Besides, the state government has issued orders to implement the use of Kannada in all its offices.

The state on 27-07-1990 adopted a resolution to strictly implement Kannada in day-to-day office affairs. Further orders were issued on April 11, 2000 and on January 28, 2020. However, two circulars issued by the BBMP Commissioner on April 30 and May 2 — related to making it mandatory to cover the face — were in English.
Naghabharana said this ‘act’ of the BBMP Commissioner was a total violation of the state government’s orders to promote the use of Kannada for official purposes, and hence he had demanded disciplinary action against the civic chief.
CS’s Kannada order
Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary has issued directions to the Urban Development Department to issue all circulars in Kannada.
TheBengalurulive has sought a reaction from the BBMP Commissioner to the KDA’s demand for disciplinary action against him, and will publish it as and when he replies.
