Bengaluru: The high-profile Renukaswamy murder case involving Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and his associates is set to move into the trial stage, with the Bengaluru 57th CCH Court framing charges under multiple serious sections of the Indian Penal Code. The court has fixed November 10 as the date for the first phase of trial proceedings (FTT – Fixing Date for Trial).
Charges Framed Against Darshan and 16 Co-Accused
The court formally read out the charges against all 17 accused, including Darshan, under the following IPC sections:
- 302: Murder
- 355: Assault with intent to dishonor
- 120B: Criminal conspiracy
- 204: Destruction of evidence
- 259: Kidnapping
- 143, 147, 148, 149: Unlawful assembly and rioting
All accused have denied the charges, maintaining that they are “false and baseless.”
What Happens Next: Witness Examination and Evidence Phase
With the charges framed, the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) must now submit the list of witnesses to the court. After the list is verified, the court will issue summons to witnesses for examination.
Key evidence in the case includes:
- A wooden stick, nylon rope, and lathi allegedly used in the crime
- Forensic and FSL reports, along with statements from expert witnesses
Once these are recorded, cross-examination by the defense lawyers will follow. Subsequently, under CrPC Section 313, the court will record statements from all accused.
If Darshan and his defense team choose to present counter-evidence or witnesses, the court will allow it before moving to final arguments and judgment.
Bail Unlikely Until Key Witnesses Depose
Legal experts indicate that Darshan’s chances of getting bail remain slim until the key witnesses have deposed and their statements are cross-examined. Since the case involves a murder charge carrying the possibility of life imprisonment or death penalty, the court is expected to proceed cautiously.
The 57th CCH Court in Bengaluru will now decide the actor’s fate based on evidence and testimonies presented during the upcoming trial.
