Siddaramaiah Breaks Devaraj Urs’ CM Tenure Record, Credits People and High Command; ₹800-Cr Projects Launched in Vijayapura

Vijayapura / Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said he has broken the late Devaraj Urs’ record to become one of the longest-serving Chief Ministers of the state, crediting the achievement to the blessings of the people, the support of legislators and the backing of the party high command.

Addressing a large gathering in Vijayapura after inaugurating and laying the foundation stone for multiple development projects, Siddaramaiah said surpassing Devaraj Urs’ tenure of 7 years and 239 days was possible only because of public support. “This record is not mine alone. It belongs to the people of Karnataka,” he said, expressing gratitude to citizens across the state.

Major Development Push in Vijayapura

The Chief Minister announced that development works worth over ₹800 crore have been taken up in Vijayapura district. This includes the inauguration of projects worth ₹82 crore and foundation-laying for works exceeding ₹730 crore.

He also announced the inauguration of the Rani Chennamma statue and said the city’s bus terminal has been renamed Kittur Rani Chennamma Bus Stand, honouring the freedom fighter.

South India’s First Velodrome

Highlighting sports infrastructure, Siddaramaiah said a velodrome for cyclists — the first of its kind in South India — has been established in the region, marking a significant step towards promoting professional cycling.

Medical College Assurance

The Chief Minister assured that a government medical college will be established in Vijayapura. He noted that the previous government had considered a PPP model, but the current administration intends to set it up as a government institution. He added that Karnataka currently has 71 medical colleges, of which 22 are government-run, and that trauma centres and super-specialty hospitals will be developed in other districts as well.

Flyover Project Worth ₹160 Crore

Responding to demands raised by MLA Basanagouda Yatnal, Siddaramaiah assured that a three-kilometre flyover costing ₹160 crore will be constructed from Kanakadasa Circle to Ambedkar Circle and Shivaji Circle, easing traffic congestion in the city.

Political Context

Siddaramaiah pointed out that the Congress won six out of eight Assembly seats in Vijayapura district, and said the district’s support has been crucial to the party’s statewide success. “To win 135 seats in the state, Vijayapura’s blessings mattered a lot,” he remarked, recalling his 45 years of political journey across Karnataka.

Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, Vijayapura district in-charge minister M. B. Patil, ministers Shivanand Patil, MLA Basanagouda Yatnal and other public representatives were present at the event.
