Australia’s Kimberly Birrell caused an upset by defeating defending champion Yuan Yue in the first round match at the ATX Open in Austin, Texas. Birrell won 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) with strategic play in both sets while Yuan struggled with her first serves.
