Bengaluru: In a disturbing reminder of growing safety concerns for women in the city, two separate incidents of sexual harassment involving a bike taxi driver and a food delivery executive have been reported in Bengaluru, leading to arrests by city police.
Bike Taxi Driver Arrested for Harassing Woman Techie
In the first incident, a woman tech professional alleged that she was sexually harassed by a bike taxi rider while commuting to her workplace. The incident occurred near the Nagarabhavi Underpass on January 7.
According to police, the woman, who usually travels by cab, opted for a bike taxi due to heavy traffic. Shortly after the ride began, the rider allegedly behaved inappropriately and attempted to move closer to her despite her placing her bag between them for safety. The situation worsened near the underpass, where the rider reportedly acted indecently.
The woman immediately asked the rider to stop the bike and alerted on-duty traffic police, following which a complaint was registered through the 112 emergency helpline. Based on her statement, the Annapoorneshwari Nagar Police arrested the accused bike taxi driver and remanded him to judicial custody.
Food Delivery Executive Held for Assault Attempt
In a separate case reported from Kothanur, a food delivery executive from West Bengal was arrested for allegedly stalking, hugging, and attempting to sexually assault a young woman on the road.
Police said the accused followed the woman from behind, grabbed her, and behaved indecently. When the woman screamed for help, the accused fled, abandoning his bike at the spot. He later returned to retrieve the vehicle and allegedly assaulted the woman again.
Based on the victim’s complaint, the Kothanur Police registered a case, arrested the accused Muniruddin Khan, and sent him to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison under serious charges, including attempt to sexual assault.
Growing Concern Over Women’s Safety
Both incidents have once again raised serious concerns over women’s safety while using bike taxis and app-based delivery services in Bengaluru. Police officials stated that strict action will be taken against offenders and urged women to immediately report any suspicious or inappropriate behaviour.
Law enforcement agencies have reiterated that zero tolerance will be shown toward crimes against women, and offenders will face stringent legal consequences.
