Bidar / Bengaluru: Veteran Congress leader and former Karnataka Transport Minister Dr Bhimanna Khandre passed away at his residence in Bidar on Friday due to age-related ailments. He was 102.
Dr Khandre had been suffering from prolonged age-related health complications. Over the past week, his condition worsened due to respiratory distress and fluctuating blood pressure, following which he was admitted to a private hospital in Bidar. After initial treatment, he was discharged and brought back home, where he breathed his last.
A senior leader of the Indian National Congress, Dr Khandre served as Karnataka’s Transport Minister between 1992 and 1994, leaving a distinct imprint on the state’s public transport administration during his tenure.
Dr Bhimanna Khandre’s political legacy continues through his family. His son Eshwar Khandre currently serves as Karnataka’s Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment and is also the district in-charge minister for Bidar. His grandson Sagar Khandre is the sitting Member of Parliament from Bidar.
Condolences poured in from political leaders across party lines, remembering Dr Khandre as a disciplined leader, administrator, and one of the senior-most Congress figures from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.
